I got the privilege to interview a talented artist by the name of Pastel Rae. If you are like me and love finding creative artists on Instagram you will understand why I was drawn to this lovely lady. Her artwork is beautiful and speaks for its self.
1.What is your name and where are you from (state/nationality)?
My name is Pastel Rae (that’s right I was born with an art name). I am a black, White, Spanish, and Native American female artist from Sacramento, CA.
2. When did you know you wanted to become an artist?
I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was in like the 2nd or 3rd grade. I would tell everyone that’s what I wanted to be, but as I grew up I never thought it would be possible. Possible as in being a starving artist was not a possibility for me. But after working at some of my dream jobs I realized that nothing made me happier than art.
3. Would you say your fashion and music taste is reflected in your artwork and if so how?
Definitely! When it comes to fashion I am all over the place. One minute I’m in boyfriend jeans and heels and the next I’m in a flowy skirt flats and a button up. I feel the same way about music. I love so many different genres and the words speak to me on so many levels that I just paint what I hear or how I feel. My fashion sense and the music I listen to is all over the board you can see why my style in art doesn’t really have a style at all. Hip-hop pieces, dogs, flowers, the women’s body…I just love to paint.
4. When you paint do you have certain things you need to have around you to fuel your creative juices like music playlist, snacks, flowers or do you prefer complete silence?
Music is one of my biggest influences so I HAVE to have music playing. The louder the music the better. But my music playlist also has to match with what I’m painting at that moment. I can’t paint a field of flowers and be listening to NWA. It just doesn’t work for me. So I would need like Etta James “Sunday Kinda Love” or something of that nature.
5. What has been your greatest achievement as an artist so far and where do you see yourself in 10 years?
My greatest achievement as an artist…I don’t know honestly. I’ve had so many wonderful things happen in the last 3 years of my journey that it’s hard to name just one. My painting going viral is probably the biggest moment of my art career, but then again being able to inspire others is what it’s all about for me. When someone writes you and say’s “you inspire me”, that feeling is unexplainable and worth every tear, long nights, and doubts I have gone through.
6. What message do you want to give out to the world with your artwork?
I want people to see me through my work. I want them to see and feel how passionate I am through my art. I want the chance to impact someone’s life by giving them a chance to view things through my mind and my creativity.
7. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to be an artist?
Don’t give up! Don’t let anyone make you feel as though your dream is unreachable. Don’t compare yourself to other artists. Become friends with other artists, even if it’s just by social media. Other artists can help you in marketing yourself and also help motivate you to keep going. But my overall advice is just be inspired to take a shot and follow your dreams because if you don’t you’ll never be truly happy.
8. If people want to get in contact with you, how should they reach you?
The best way to reach me is by email (PastelRae@gmail.com) however, I do have a website www.PastelRae.com. I am also on Facebook (Pastel Rae)https://www.facebook.com/pastelrae/videos/873404932785983/?video_source=pages_finch_thumbnail_video, Instagram (PastelRae)https://www.instagram.com/pastelrae/, and I have a YouTube page.
